Meditations from Psalm 139: Psalm 139:1-Fully Known

“Lord, You have searched (examined) me and You know me.” Psalm 139:1

Like a skillful doctor who studies an X-ray, MRI or CT scan to see what’s going on beyond what the naked eye can see, so the Lord searches our hearts and our minds. He looks beyond what people can see or know about us and goes to the deepest, innermost parts of us, and He examines us.

He sees the chaos, the hurts, the fears and doubts that we hide away so no one can see. Even the few people that we bare our souls to can’t see what He does. He understands us better than we understand ourselves, He understands why we do what we do.

He knows why I wake up at 3 am, heart pounding out of control, filled with anxiety. He knows why I snap so quickly sometimes on the people that I love. But instead of heaping shame on me, He offers me grace and a safe place of peace and healing & forgiveness.

As the Great Physician, He knows where we need to be healed. Where we need to rest instead of strive, trust instead of worry. He sees us time & time again, as we search for ways to heal other than Him. Yet He alone holds the only prescription that will heal us.

You see, the next part of the verse says He knows us. Not just as an acquaintance, but this Hebrew word “Yada” means that He knows us intimately. It means “to learn to know, know by experience, to reveal oneself”.

The God who created the universe, who created galaxies, mountains & oceans & every living thing, examines us individually and knows us intimately.

And even knowing the darkest, unhealthiest parts of us, He loves us unconditionally. Even though He can see our lack of faith and our doubts, He continues to show up for us and be our Faithful Rock, our Peace, our Comforter and Provider.

He wants to be the Peace in our chaos, the Provider for our needs, the Strength in our weakness, our source of Joy in good times and bad.

God, the Great Physician, is also our Great Healer. Only He knows what we need, and only He can provide it.

And He will, if we just turn to Him and trust Him. He alone can heal us. He alone is the answer for everything that we need.

Lord, when I read this verse & meditate on the fact that You examine me and know the worst of me, I can’t believe that You love me with endless unconditional love. I can’t believe the grace and patience You have for me. I’m so thankful, though, that You do. I’m thankful that You see the darkness in me and bring light & healing for my wounds and soul-sickness. I’m thankful that when anxiety overwhelms me, You fill me with Peace when I seek You. Thank you. Your love amazes and overwhelms me beyond measure.

This song spoke to me as I was thinking through this verse this morning. ❤️ “Just One Touch” by Kim Walker-Smith https://youtu.be/qk8JBsZFA8M
